Material Data Declaration - High-Level Labeling Application
11/2004
As mentioned above, the material data declaration is a new compromise in the labeling application because the simple positive and negative-declaration are not enough to satisfy the legal requirements that may be changed.

Despite the high cost factor, material data declaration provides, at the same time, solutions to the following tasks:

  • Statements for Legality - Self-declaration
  • Provide information for production and service
  • Ease the eco-design processes
  • Traceability of the products
  • Facilitate decisions for reuse or recycling
  • Inform users about environmental demands
The material data declaration is still a very complex approach at the present. To be able to reach the full material declaration, a lot of works need to be done. Some examples are offered as the solution to the material data declaration:

1. IMDS [IMDS], the automotive industry material data system. A joint development of Audi, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, Opel, Porsche, VW and Volvo to archive and maintain materials used for car manufacture.

2. ZVEI Umbrella Specs [ZVEI02], a draft on standardization of information on substances and materials in products

3. DIN 19220 [DIN19220], the method for declaration of materials in production from electrical and electronic industries

4. PAS 1025 [PAS1025], an interface for environmental information exchange

5. RosettaNet [RN], B2B information exchange interface

In the EFSOT project, we tried to gather some experience on material data declaration by creating an online readout system with data matrix label. This experience will be discussed in details at the technical section of this report.
